The CASPISNET board member, Head of Caspian Sea Hydrometeorology Department at the Institute of Geography- The Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan Dr. Said Safarov in his interview to Azerbaijan Television Company Khazar TV, mentioned that, the water level has decreased by 114 cm over the last 10 years. Dr. Said Safarov said that one of the reasons for this is a decrease in the flow of rivers flowing into the Caspian Sea. In fact, the Kura River has not been bringing fresh water to the Caspian Sea for the last two years.
Said Safarov also said that the decrease in the level of the Caspian Sea is faster than the decrease in the flow in the rivers. The reason for this is the decrease in precipitation falling on the surface and the increase in the process of evaporation from the sea surface.
The Doctor of Geography also added that the decreasing water level in the Caspian Sea poses a problem both for the operation of ports and the water inhabitants.
According to Dr. Said Safarov, the number of days with warm and dry winds blowing from the east and south has increased recently. As a result, since 1995 the water level in the Caspian Sea has been dropping more than 2 metres
